About Us
We are a student-led society that wants to mobilise support for the efforts to defeat humanity’s greatest scourge – ageing.
Our Approach to Ageing and Longevity
If we do not make significant progress in addressing this issue soon, there will be dire consequences. Ageing is already the leading cause of death worldwide, killing an estimated 100,000 people per day [1]de Grey, Aubrey. (2007). Life Span Extension Research and Public Debate: Societal Considerations. Studies in Ethics, Law, and Technology. 1. 10.2202/1941-6008.1011.. But the situation will only get worse in the future if we do nothing. Humanity is currently on a trajectory to economic and demographic catastrophe in the next few decades as the world’s population gets older, putting an unbearable strain on economies, particularly as healthcare costs for the elderly skyrocket. We need to radically change the way we treat age-related diseases – not through traditional whack-a-mole medicine, which treats a disease only for another to take its place, but with therapies that target the root cause of all these diseases. We need therapies that cure ageing itself.
Our society has a two-pronged approach to support humanity in reaching this goal. Firstly, we want to educate the public about the biological process of ageing, how it eventually leads to diseases and the enormous impact these diseases have on society. We particularly want to stress the fact that ageing is not an immutable part of life but can be controlled through various interventions. The goal is to have the public support scientists and companies working on ageing, and to raise awareness amongst politicians and policymakers to enable them to take this field seriously, for example by promoting research and supporting the adoption of rejuvenation therapies. Secondly, we intend to connect researchers, investors and organisations involved in the ageing and longevity field to increase the pace of progress. We also hope, through our activities, to inspire people who have previously not been involved in this field to become active champions of this worthwhile endeavour – whether it be as public proponents, researchers, entrepreneurs, investors, politicians, policymakers, etc.
Together we can reach these goals by increasing not only our lifespan, but our healthspan. Together we can bring an end to ageing.
